    Rental Magica - 07

Posted in Rental Magica, Series Reviews at Nov 20th, 2007 by choco /

Eudaiches Tholoide (reminds me of Death Note)

    [Summary]

Itsuki is passing by a bunch of kids playing soccer holding onto his reward that he had bought for himself. Suddenly he sees a girl with red hair bleeding green blood from her arms. Itsuki runs to get a towel, so the red-hair girl can clean up her wound. She then tells Itsuki that her name is Lapis and that she is a homunculus. Itsuki is puzzled. Lapis explains that a homunculus is an artificial human.

The sun is almost coming down. Itsuki and Lapis sit on a wooden bench. Lapis is hungry, but doesn’t know how to eat the food Itsuki bought. He shows her that you have to blow on the other end to make the food come out. Lapis takes a bite and eats all of it. Itsuki is sad because he didn’t get to eat any of his reward. Itsuki gives Lapis the business card for Astral. Afterwards, the both of them part ways.

Itsuki has made it back to Astral. Out of nowhere, Lapis attacks him with a hug. Lapis wants Astral to help her with a job. She wants the eye of basilisk, the king of poisonous snakes. Once you look into the eyes of the basilisk, you turn into stone. As a reward, Lapis gives them a fake Roman Imperial Coin, but even though it is fake, it is worth a lot. Everyone disagree, but Nekoyashiki gives Lapis the papers needed to be sign.

In a misty place, Lapis leads the group to an opening where the basilisk lays. Lapis has wonder off. A few minutes later they hear the basilisk’s roar and Itsuki charges off to save Lapis. He sees Lapis just standing there in front of the basilisk. The basilisk has broken free causing a huge uproar. Seeing Nekoyashiki’s cats, Itsuki orders them to put a barrier around Lapis.

The basilisk is ready to pounce on Itsuki, but Mikan protects him, but gets blown away. Itsuki exposes his glam sight and with the help of Honami and Nekoyashiki, they defeat it. Itsuki collapses and Lapis disappears.

While lying in bed, Nekoyashiki disposes the magical pollution. Lapis comes back to see if Itsuki is alright. Everyone finds out that she is a homunculus because of her dreen blood. No one trusts her anymore except for Itsuki. Mikan does a Shinto chant, so Lapis can’t get near them. Lapis becomes mad and attacks them viciously. Everyone is fine. But Itsuki wants to save Lapis.

Itsuki learns from Nekoyashiki that Eudaiches Tholoide is Lapis’s master and he was very interested in his father. In a room filled with all these tubs is Lapis. She has now combine herself with the eye of basilisk. Eudaiches who is Lapis’s master had expected more from Itsuki, but he didn’t.

    [Impression]

What change today was the opening. Instead of it being in Japanese, it was in English. huh, it sounded pretty good. A homunculus names Lapis. Great Idea!! This episode has the same feel as the one in the beginnings. Finally a enemy has arrive by the name Eudaiches Tholoide.

It seems that Itsuki hasn’t learn the lesson of you can’t save everyone. But will see if he can save Lapis? She is gonna have to get killed if she tries to kill Itsuki.

Next Episode is called Mistletoe. Is it Christmas? =D

The children of Astral, well actually anime main characters in general, seems to have a very shaky grasp of morality.

First they mercilessly beat up and slaughter a chained up beast that’s been trapped in a dark room for who knows how long…then they treat a random stranger like a total shit then actually dared to act surprised and victimized when said stranger goes emo after all the bad treatment and lashes back.

I think a few years in boot camp is in order for all of these little monsters don’t you?

See I hate Negima with a passion but there is a line in there that I absolutely love…

“Sensei…in the grand play of life you must consider yourself one of the good guys. But have you ever considered that you are actually a bad guy?”

People should follow the teachings of Socrates more. You must always reflect on yourself. Examine you own life.

well it wasn’t there fault for killing the basilisk. They were hired to do so. And they can’t back down from a job or they’ll be erased from the Association’s registry. After all, Astral’s slogan is lending a mage to meet your needs of that customer.

They treated the stranger like total shit because they did not know who she was and all she did was cause trouble for them instead of helping. And also she was a homunculus created by an enemy of theirs.

Most people believed that they are good guys, but deep down they know they are bad once they reflect on themselves which is what you have say about the whole Socrates thing. Maybe somewhere in this anime, things will change.

People always treat each other with a certain amount of suspicion and considering the events and all the trouble Lapis had caused, I’d say they had a good reason to be angry at her. I mean, apparently she can be controlled by her master to do his bidding at any time (or at least the characters are under that position) so even she herself doesn’t have any ill intends, she can’t be trusted to just hang around Itsuki whenever and wherever.

“(or at least the characters are under that position)”
Eh, meant to say under that impression, sry for the lack of though in my posts -.-

Hehe…my post was actually suppose to be sort of tongue in cheek. I know I can’t expect any sort of deep philosophical thought in a anime based off of a visual novel series.

But I do think that there is a lack of plots with the twist “what if I’m/we’re wrong?”…if there is more of that it will open up more possibilities…stem some of the stagnation that anime seems to be suffering from nowadays.

@Zzz…: But for someone to realize their wrong, they have to have proof shown to them that they are wrong. No proof was provided of Lapis being trustworthy. This is the reason why animes are suffering.

Even though you can’t based philosophy to anime, there is always some kind of connection between them. Ppl just like you will make that same connection.

And other than unsubstantiatable evidence nothing had conclusively shown that Lapis or anyone meant Itsuki harm until she went yandere at the very end. Based on all that happened before that the characters cannot conclusively say that she deliberately put him in harm’s way. The viewers have the God’s Eye and we can say afterwards that the duck was indeed a duck. But the characters only had suspicions until the big reveal. Embracing that suspicion but not examining the alternative put them in the wrong. Just what if the suspicion prove to be just paranoia?

I see what you’re getting at. Your saying that they think Lapis is a threat because she attacked them at the very end. When they should really be asking, “Did she mean ill intentions when she attacked or are we getting ahead of ourselves and assuming that she is bad?”

If we were to compared this to reality, it would make a huge difference. When you first meet or see someone, you either have good feelings about this person or bad feelings. They have dilemmas on which one to choose. But if you were to get to know that someone, then you would know what kind of person this is. So if Homani, Mikan, Nekoyashiki, Kureha and whoever I did not mention, got to know Lapis instead of pushing her away from Itsuki, then no suspicions would arise.
