I keep on laughing when I heard the english dub voice of young Lelouch. The dub will never and I mean never be as good as Japanese. Everytime I watch it, I burst out with laughter. They ruin it. C.C. voice is alright. But for young Lelouch, it sounds so wrong!!! Lelouch only has a little part which sounds good to me. Suzaku actually has a good one too. Clovis is just BAD!
If you were to buy this, do not watch it dub because you will be making the biggest mistake. America does not know what it is doing when it comes to dubbing. The acting sounds fake. Will there ever be a dub good enough to watch or even better than the Japanese? Like that would ever happen.

It’s the main character, Lelouch, who’s the ‘hook’ for this series, at least for me. There’s just something about geniuses that take on the world (at least the Britanian part of it) that’s just so cool…

Oddly enough, Teenage Lelouch sounds the way I expected, but the rest is fine, I guess. I’m not particularly attuned to dubs and all. But I wonder, though, would the voice actor for Lelouch get the more dramatic parts right?

Well, I don’t have any objections towards English dubbings (FYI I’ve been made inane ever since Animax introduced English-dub-only shows — where’s my Nippon dubs w/ English subtitles? —), but in any case, I’ll be seeing how the series will be shown in the DVDs.
In another point, Gee-ASS? I thought it’s pronounced “Gay-yahs.” (How do one makes a guided pronunciation?)

Never watched any anime in english dubs.
Never plan to.
Never gonna support dubs of any sort.
IMO the only language that authentic anime “CAN” be dubbed into is Cantonese. History of the Japanese and Chinese language have many links - among those links, Canto and Jap have the most similarities and parallel patterns in speech. Either way, SAVE money on dubbing! better subs! (next time there shall be two subs: literal and perceptual)

Than get the sub’s, never been any choice for me, ever since I got introduced way back with the old-school anime like Akira, 8-Man After, and Venus Wars from the early 90’s. They always change stuff from the actual translations to fit the mouth movements anyway for another language.

i agree 200%…english dub is AWAYS worse…can’t believe why anyone would want to watch code geass in eng. dub….besides the seiyu for lelouch was one of my fav. voice talents ever (next to the seiyu for Kira in Death Note)

Even if you don’t support the English cast, when you buy the DVD, you’ll be supporting the production company of the anime. ^_^ Just because it was licensed here by Bandai does not mean that Sunrise doesn’t get most of the profits. They still hold the rights to give others permission to distribute it.
(The few Japanese fanboys who are against getting the DVDs are only trying to justify the fact that they’d rather watch it for free online. But Japanese animation companies are swooping down on youtubers, now, for episodes that haven’t been licensed in the US.)
And if ANYONE can’t give me a video link to an EXCELLENT fan-dubbed series, you have no right to judge the English cast for what they do. You have a problem with it, you do a dub yourself and send the link over to me. (pirate.happy @ gmail.com)
I know this show will exceed my expectations. They have almost an all-star cast (Bosch, Bloom, Freeman, Lowenthall, etc).

I’m glad all of you English natives have the right to say Japanese is always better when you more than likely don’t even speak it. Not “supporting” dubs is just an excuse to not purchase licensed anime, and the downloading you do because “subs are better” is, in fact, illegal, and dishonorable. If it wasn’t for the dub market in America and other countries, anime would not have the funding to even exist. I bet that you also never would have even become involved with anime if you hadn’t watched something dubbed when you were younger. So cut this crap about Japanese always being better. If you seriously are of the mindset that there are no good dub jobs out there, then clearly, you haven’t seen much anime.
As for the actors they did choose for the series, I think the selection is prime pickings, but the acting does seem to be a bit cheesy. With this being one of my favorite anime as it stands, I am extremely picky with whom I believe would sound good, and I guarantee you, the second I heard Bosch was voicing Lelouch, I was very disappointed. Mr. Bosch is a very talented actor, but I don’t believe he fits Lelouch at all, in any way. I personally do not believe this will be one of the better dubbing projects because of whoever formed the cast list, and I suppose the fact that Bandai has even anything to do with it says enough.

With that type of attitude, I’m surprised you’d like Code Geass at all, personally.
You don’t have to understand a language to feel the emotions of the words spoken in it, which you do feel in Japanese and don’t in English, because English actors, and caucasian voices in general, do NOT fit anime characters made by Japanese and designers FOR Japanese actors and their voices. Asian voices have a completely different tone than Caucasian ones, and the manner of speech is also absolutely completely different. You cannot dub an anime with Caucasian actors, speaking in a Caucasian language, and expect good results, it’s basically not possible.
Oh and, please speak for yourself. You’re right that most of the North American anime fan base doesn’t speak Japanese, but some do. And those of us who do reserve the right to want to hear the originals, since most companies’ translators do a pretty horrific job, between you and I.
I’m not against piracy whatsoever. But the point is, that’s the reason people don’t purchase dubs. I purchased the full DVD box set of Loveless the day it came out, to replace my AarinFantasy fansubs I had acquired for free ages ago. Do you know what I did? Watched half an episode of the commercially released series WITH SUBTITLES, so this wasn’t even a dub (because the company releasing Loveless in Japan was smart enough not to give dubbing rights to America), and the translations were so awful and so innacurate that I simply couldn’t watch it. I tossed the DVD, and scoured the internet to redownload a copy of AarinFantasy’s excellent subs. And that’s the way it’s been with most of my purchases. I don’t know Japanese fluently, meaning, I do need subs to follow the more complex aspects of a show. But I know enough to stop and say “hey..they didn’t say that at ALL” on most commercially released subtitled versions. With a dub, I couldn’t even hear that they fucked the translation.

i dont think its that bad to watch it in English because i personally think that it sounds wrong in Japanese because everyones voices are too old for their character. i mean Lelouch sounds like a 34 year old man! but i understand how its not quite as good because you miss a lot of stuff that they say in Japanese and not English and some stuff they say wasn’t part of the script. but oh well i prefer English.

I find nothing wrong with the english dub, it seems fine and appropriote for the characters, more so than the japanese actors anyway. America can handle dubs, I’m actually sure that if you were japanese you wouldn’t think there was much of a quality difference if any at all.
So far, I’ve noticed that there are three groups when it comes to dubs:
1.Those who dislike having to read subs and only watch dubs.
2.Those who dislike dubs no matter what because they are dubs.
3.Those who do a case by case judgement.
Incidently I’m with 3.
Also proof that America can handle dubs: Cowboy Bebop.
If you disagree on the above then you are clearly with 2…

I think for Code Geass I will prefer the subs. The voice acting for Lelouch sounds too young in my opinion and Lelouch is basically a very mature person having faced tough struggles in life and should have a more matured/older voice.
I like subs better than dubs as they lack emotion in most animes. I intend to buy this anime too but I want it in sub. Watching it in english is one thing, but when it comes down to buying an anime, I always prefer the original which is in sub.

The VAing in CG~english is terrible. Period. That doesn’t mean all english dubbing is bad. I LOVED Yu Yu Hakusho in english, it was SOOOOOO well done. Same for DB series.
I blame Bandai; how the fuck did they even get the license?! Funimation, imo, has always done great Dub Casting and scripting.

i personaly think that Bosch was perfect for lulouch however the younger voice not so much,i feel like Bosch does make lelouch feeling heard with just the way he talks i know its true some dubs are horribly done code geass isnt one of them,maybe it just the fact that the english doesnt sound exactly the same like the japanese version does,its not that one better it just maybe the voice you heard first or maybe even ur native,i speak alittle japanese but even when i didnt i still enjoyed watching it with the sub txt but now that i know to me it sounds that the american and the japanese both do wonderful voice acting
