    Macross Frontier - 01

Posted in Macross Frontier, Series Reviews at Dec 27th, 2007 by nutcase23 /

The Colony Fleet Macross Frontierfalls under attack by unknown attackers!!!

Welcome to my first episode review! Well, here goes!

Macross is a new series to me so I won’t profess to know anything about the universe. I picked this up cause it looked interesting ^^. This latest installment in the series boasts some nice 3D graphics and some cool action. Well, don’t just listen (or rather read….) to me babble, see for yourself…..

For those of you who like space action in the form of Stellvia style you might want to try this. Macross fans probably don’t need any convincing.

The story begins a brief introduction of the characters. I’ll let pictures do the talking.

    is it edible?…..

    Another Lacus clone?

Wouldn’t you love to know what they are watching?

“I’m too cool to be in this show…”

Of course, the peace and tranquility is soon disrupted by unknown attackers…

    Cool radar…

    “Kira Yamato! Strike Launching!”…not

And as usual, your standard generic grunt soldier stands no chance against the incoming onslaught. So they send out the big guns, the variable fighters, which are also more or less the focal point of the story in terms of mecha.

    Before…

    After…!

    “Eat lead alien scum!”

However, despite their efforts, the attacking force manages to break past the defense line and break into the colony and all hell breaks loose.

    “Muahahahaha!”

Our heroine(?) Lanka (the green haired girl) gets into a sticky situation with the big bad robot. Our hero, being the man that he is, jumps into an abandoned variable fighter and challenges the invader.

    “Aaaah!! Save me!”

    “I’m coming my dear!”

    “Eat more lead alien scum!!!”

    [Conclusion]

All in all a good episode, although they left the conclusion of the battle to the next episode. But this episode leaves alot to speculate about. Chances are the boys will be involved in this as future pilots. The pop star will obviously be there somehow as character development or just eye candy though the latter is unlikely.

Also, does anyone notice how similiar this episode is to Gundam SEED?

Peaceful space colony—>gets attacked—>innocent boy gets involved—> said boy jumps into nearby mecha and proceeds to kick ass…..

or maybe I’m just thinking too much…

And here’s some pics to end a really long first post.

“Why is a guy undressing in front of me?”

“Now that you have seen me naked…You’ll have to marry me…”

“Yes! Yes! I’ll do it! I’m actually a 65 year old with extreme cosmetic surgery!”

To be fair, it’s like the beginning of many mech series, like the original Macross. Actually, it’s almost exactly like the first Macross story (and the original Gundam series.)

The so-called “grunt fighters” (The VF-17 Nightmare) is a variable fighter as well. Just that for some reason, the pilots seem a little green behind the ears and don’t fully utilise the capabilities of the fighter. A pity, considering the VF-17 is one of my favourite Macross fighters, and in previous Macross installments was considered very formidable. But I guess they want to show off the new VF-25. As zoku88 said, I wouldn’t say that this episode was ripping off Gundam Seed, but rather borrowing story elements from previous Macross series, most of which predate Gundam Seed itself.

True enough…I’m not denying that it works. There’s nothing like a big bang to get things going. If they keep the pace well this should turn out to be another enjoyable series. I don’t know much about the first 2 macross series, but the first thing that popped up in my head was the attack on Heliopolis.

Anyway, I hope there wouldn’t be any angsty characters. Another Shin (Gundam SEED Destiny) would probably turn me off lol.

But the part where they over lapped the concert and the space dogfight was a very nice touch.

Sadly, my debut to anime is relatively recent so I have not the chance to catch much earlier series. I started watching anime after my friend introduced me to Gundam SEED (about 3 years back).

      Thanks for the comments guys.

      Primeparadigm:

Really? Then it is surprising that the pilots of the VF-17 didn’t even change forms once. They may be green, but even then it seems….But you are probably right about them wanting to showcase the new model.

I was surprised when the pilot ejected his external armour to enter the colony. Makes sense though since that much armour would probably make it unmanageable in gravity conditions.

Just FYI idols/songstress in Macross are more than eye candy, they typically take a central role in the plot and actually turn the tide of battle with their singing… and I WISH I was making that up.

I thought Lacus clone, but then I remembered Macross has the whole singing thing before. Not to give anything away, but I like how it was done more in Gundam then Macross. Great episode though. The 4 month wait is going to be hard.

Those blue grunts are VF-171s not VF-17s. Stupid that not one of them even changed to Gerwalk mode (chicken walker) least not Battroid.

I’ve seen most of the Macross stuff, minus 7. Even the non-canon 2.

This has a TON of tributes to previous Macross shows, just watch Do You Remember Love and the whole episode basically follows the same pattern, i.e. concert interrupted by Zentraedi invasion, girl rescued by timely rescue by somewhat egotistical pilot, etc… The main male lead reminds me of Isamu with the volume turned down on his attitude a bit, i.e. always pushing for a new high.

This looks like it revisits ‘Zero’ a bit, just check the last name on the singer… she has the same last name as the singer from Macross Zero… Also notice how the aliens have a similar pattern/biological nature to the alien found in Macross Zero… Probably related to the protoculture, and the aliens are after the singer.

It’s great that macross has a big animation budget. If you’ve ever seen the first series, it’s horrible, done by several different studios on a sort of lowest bid, pretty common way back when. I just hope the story stays decent. Pretty with a lame story is Gundam OO.

To be perfectly honest, you’ve probably got your comparisons backwards. So far most of the tropes used originated in either the original SDF Macross or MS Gundam and were repeated by SEED being that it was a rehashing of what had come before it, especially where MS Gundam and Zeta Gundam are concerned.

As to “Lacus Clyne”, if anything she’s a humongous copy of many older Gundam characters, not to mention a rather pale imitation of the original singing bimbo, Lynn Minmei.

First i just wanna say that I had to watch this episode six times in less then a 24 hour period…cuz it was that awesome..and im a Macross nut. It was fast paced with beautiful animation, outstanding music (cant wait for the singles and OST), and great action. I was reminded of DYRL and Zero alot. I pray they dont take the route they took with Macross 7 (which took me alil while to get to like..but after watching all 49 episodes, the movie, and 3 encores (fleet of the strongest women being the best) i came to like it. This series will surpass 7 and Zero imho, and i hope come close to the grandeur of Plus. I am in the highest hopes that they stick to the combat element with character development that we loved so much from the original series and Plus. The supernatural aliens and pop princess should play roles as traditional to the series, but should not cloud every episode (ala Macross 7).

I have to agree that the 1st episode has alot of elements from other series just rehashed…but lets be honest…there has not been anything original in a mecha show (or any anime genre) to come out of Japan since the early 80’s. Yet we find ourselves watching because we love it.

i wasnt watching this thinking it was like Gundam Seed at all, cuz that show was meant to take the spot that Turn A Gundam failed to do…blend in all the alternate Gundam universes into one. Seed was nothing more then a copy, with Destiny being a pale clone of Zeta..and any hardcore fan will say Zeta pwns all.

I can’t express how happy it is to finally be able see another episodic series of macross being made. It’s unbelievable. I have kept tabs on this remarkable title over the span of 15 years, since I was introduced to its world of combat mechas and concurrent flow of sweet and bitter romantic developments. The story will have to satiate my ardent fan-cravings because I expect no less from the MACROSS trademark. Even so, It’s going to be difficult but keeping an open mind while indulging in the show will be less destructive to my health. I am sure my emotion will go haywire and skyrocket away into an awful state of deep and dark abhorrence for MACROSS and all its abominable franchise if the Macross: the Last Frontier was to end in an unlikable way. Let us all pray to heaven, …or hell for the desired plot/conclusion. =)

but let’s face it, what is with the blond-haired babe which looks to me will be the heroine that will try to stop the warring nations through lyrics and melodic expressions?

I can sure as hell explain how the change of hair coloring in comparison to series back in the decade/s which as we know it, had moderate to none bleached looking characters. It can be throughly explained through psychological analysis, and substantial evidence. But that’s for another time–in class.

e.g., Final Fantasy XII and onwards.

I am not prejudice nor am I much against it. I just have a feeling that “what-if” in the near future all the heroine will become bleached blonds. Oh-NO!!! The Horror!!!
