PSU has an interesting feature about cosplay Camparing between East and West. The articles concludes that the "Americans" are bad at cosplaying when compared to the Japanese.
The only issue revolving around this pop culture happening is the blatant disregard of actually mimicking a character you can pull off. Due to this, America has been home to some of the worst, funniest, and even saddest forms of cosplay worldwide.
Having been to various conventions both in Japan, Singapore and Australia I noticed that the most anime characters are actually based on Asian physique rather then western ones, thus most asians can pull off the cosplay better. Not a cosplayer myself, but those are some of my observations as a designer.
However disagree with PSU statement and I have see some rather good western cosplay before. And don’t be discourage western readers with PSU comments!!! I Guess the author had to deal with all the bad cosplay on his eyes as he goes to those Western Anime Conferences. ^^;
ABanzai! some nice photos of Cosplay around this site.
