“Why must you come between Himawari-chan and me!”
We continue on from where episode 1 left off.
[Summary]
Previously, we ended with Doumeki doing research in his grandfather’s storehouse and Watanuki going off to find him. Watanuki brings food and eventually ends up helping Doumeki with his research.
By Watanuki’s clumsiness, they stumble upon an old book written by Doumeki’s grandfather. Within it is the solution to recovering Watanuki’s right eye.
However, they are interrupted by a strange creature emerging from the book Himawari-chan gave to Watanuki before they can read the solution.
The creature proceeds to consume the words of Doumeki’s book while Watanuki and Doumeki argue over a way of stopping it. Fortunately, Yuuko’s timely (or destined as the theme of the show goes) arrival solves that problem for them.
Yuuko identifies the creature as a “本の虫”, or bookworm. It apparently lives within books and eats words that are of value and importance to people. Thus, the solution to recover Watanuki’s eye is now gone.
The excitement doesn’t stop however as Watanuki is soon visited by the Karasu-Tengu.
We soon find out that the Zashiki-warashi, who is often protected by them, has been captured. For those watching the series for the first time, the Zashiki-warashi in the series comes from the first season. She takes the form of a young girl and she is in love with Watanuki, confessing to him in one of the 1st season episodes. Apparently, there has been a mad scramble for Watanuki’s right eye in the spiritual world and she has somehow gotten involved in it for Watanuki’s sake. Why Watanuki’s eye is so sought after remains unknown.
Regardless, the Karasu-Tengu are requesting for Yuuko’s help. On accepting suitable payment, Yuuko sends Watanuki down. Although usually reluctant, Watanuki accepts when he realises it is for his sake that the Zashiki-Warashi is in this predicatment.
[Overall Impressions]
It’s shining knight to the rescue time!
It would seem that we are not starting off with the usual “story per episode” but jumping straight into a larger story. I wasn’t expecting the first arc to last 3 episodes or more but it is not a bad thing. It would be interesting to see how Watanuki is going to pull off this rescue attempt. Perhaps this is the beginning of a relationship? Who knows?
Also, Watanuki is finally having doubts about his compatibility with Himawari-chan, as per Yuuko’s previous warnings. It would seem Himawari is more than meets the eye. I just wish Yuuko would just spill the beans already about what she knows. But that takes the fun out of the show doesn’t it?
