An American anime fan, Skye Lynn Budnick disappeared in Japan after buying a single way ticket. Family found a suicide note which she did not send.

While there are obviously other issues when it comes to how much attention this story has received, you have to keep in mind that this story is pretty unusual. Sure, people write suicide notes and disappear everyday, but it isn’t very often that they run off to japan to do it and this one happened to be an anime fan, thus making it newsworthy to ANN.
I agree that they have to be careful about this though; I’d hate to see ANN become a missing persons database for every runaway with an anime connection.

I read somewhere that apparently the girl wanted to have a last view of sakura blossoming before she takes her life. If that’s true, she’ll need to wait a couple more days for the sakura season to get to Sapporo.
