Plenty of sakura petals this episode.
[Summary]

Why do you even bother Watanuki…
We start off with Watanuki taking advantage of his new found knowledge about Doumeki wearing a kimono when young. Plan becomes epic fail when Doumeki readily admits to the fact and shows no concern to it. Nice try Watanuki, maybe next time.

We move on to the main part of today’s story which is Watanuki meeting with the famous exorcist girl whose existance in the show has been mentioned on and off through the first 4 episodes. He finds her staring a large cherry blossom tree which Himawari helpfully tells us is supposed to house a spirit and is the subject of the young girl’s next TV act.

It turns out that the girl is the real deal and there really is a spirit residing in the tree. However, the spirit bears no malice and is actually responsible for keeping the tree alive thus far.
The girl is depressed that the spirit would lose its home and the tree will die because of her prescence. Watanuki then comes to the rescue, drawing upon his own life lessons from the few episodes before to snap her out of it.

To spare the spirit the agony of a TV crew (although how a TV crew can affect a spirit is beyond me), Watanuki and the girl guide the spirit to Doumeki’s temple to reside in one of the cherry blossom trees there instead.
Watanuki and the girl exchange names before parting ways. Her name is Tsuyuri Kohane.
[Overall Impressions]

Perhaps the most striking thing about the whole episode is Tsuyuri Kohane herself. From start to end, her expression has been that of a very sad and lonely girl. The way her mother acts, her comment that no one has called her by her name for a long time and that her mother is “only there and not truly with her” only compounds that fact. It would seem to me that her mother is only interested in benefitting from her abilities.

Damn you Watanuki, you just added another girl into your fan club. Well, it is likely we’ll see her again as per Yuuko’s mention on Watanuki having a bond with her. Watanuki seems to have a very powerful effect on those around him.

Fanservice shot!

Rapid eye colour change
Not surprisingly, we find out that Doumeki is now able to see the spirits Watanuki sees through the half a eye he donated to Watanuki. Apparently it only happens when Watanuki is agitated or upset. Quite handy, but so much for privacy. I’m guessing this is going to play a big part somewhere.

Lastly, we get a rare glimpse at Himawari’s past in the form of a short flash back when Doumeki talked about the death of his grandfather. I wonder what happened to her? Himawari is still one big enigma and her interest in things spiritual and occult make her rather suspicious to me.

Moreover, once again, Yuuko sets Watanuki thinking about his obsession with Himawari with the question of what exactly about Himawari was it that he liked. For a person who prefers to let things take their own path, she is pretty persistant with this. Himawari must be pretty bad news.

The bond between Watanuki and Doumeki is growing closer and stronger, bit by bit. Watanuki appreciates Doumeki’s presence. Even if he doesn’t want to admit it.
Next episode, Mahjong! I never did understand all those fancy combinations and their names… >.<

Yea! We finally get to see her. Anyways, yeah, the relationship between Doumeki and Watanuki is really funny. They are close friends but both of them are just stubborn admitting it. It is just so obvious and even Himawari kept on saying it.

I guess that is one of the charms of the show. Watching them grow closer while stubbornly staying in denial is one of the reasons I like the show.
