    Mecha Galore

    Posted in waterjunk's diary at Jun 23rd, 2008 by waterjunk / 9 Comments »

I love mecha. This is acceptable I guess, coming from a guy with an engineering background.

For absolutely no particular reason, today I’m gonna hand these personal awards to the following series:

    The Tech Award: Gundam 00

First of all, Gundam 00 is the first ever Gundam to actually put in effort to make… sense. The age old “overpowered robots fighting even more overpowered robots” concept is less obvious now. In Gundam 00, people DO die and the good guys DO get owned. Fights are more realistic and no more having a single Kira Yamato destroying a whole horde of enemy robots. Everything is futuristic and I absolutely dig their GUIs.

The Humour Award: Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu

First of all for those who haven’t watched this yet… the mean brown bear shown above is actually a “mobile suit”. It basically means that you can get into one and use it to do… things that you can’t normally do? Food for thought: The bear shown is carrying a gun. How the hell does he fires the gun using his bigass arms with no fingers?

FMP Fumoffu is a sequel to the original Full Metal Panic.

    The Scale Award: Gundam SEED

The world of Gundam SEED is HUGE. I know we all hate those recycled fighting scenes but hey at least the scale of the battles is the one thing that they got it right. I particularly enjoyed massive troops fighting among each other spawning across different galaxies.

The Badassness Award: Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Take a piece of Death Note and mix it with Gundam and there you have Code Geass. This is by far THE show that I’m currently watching. Everyone’s favourite villain (depending on who you side with) Lelouch together with his gang of merry friends goes on rampage every week twisting metal and minds alike. This show is simply awesome for all the “okaay so what will you do now” moments.

The Underdog Award: Soukou no Strain

Not many people I know know about this show and I wonder why. The first episode gave me the typical impression of a soon-to-be-overpowered girl fighting in her robot accompanied by a couple of side characters. The atmosphere builds up between Sara and her friends until the last few minutes… BAM everyone got killed except Sara =.=

I won’t spoil too much on the story but give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

That’s the end of awards for now. And of course it’s just me.
