Odex intended to market the Nanoha series as a “kids show”, targetting audiences aged between 10-14 years, as seen in my impression of their broadcast. Also, they feared a backlash against the Media Development Authority for showing shows “with explicit nudity” during normal broadcasting hours (i.e. during daytime hours, before 10 p.m.), so they took a pre-emptive action and censor those scenes instead.

(Nanoha, if anyone else is interested to know, is a magical girl show that does have nude transformation scene, something that even in the liberal US of A, will have trouble with.)

Back to my own 2 cents’ worth:

In response to drmchsr0, the implications is directed against any opposition to Odex.

With this move, Odex has pre-empted all negativity about them not bringing in newer shows as soon as possible. It also gives them a “moral edge” in that they had delivered on the promise of a video-on-demand service for anime shows, including the newer “imported directly from Japan, same week telecast” shows like D.Gray-Man and Neo Angelique Abyss.

In my opinion, all the negative talk about “the wholesale copying of fan-made subtitles,” the MAFIAA-styled “love letters” and their rapping of by the Board of Film Commission, has been negated by this news.

So this strikes very hurtful for those either affected by the “love letters,” or are simply angry at Odex for being naive that this “one-uppance” is a one-all, be-all form of “apology” for their actions in the past.

To sum up my overall opinion:

If you feel that anime, as a subcommunity, has been tainted with mainstream popularity and massive commercialization, time to move on to another, alternative, non-mainstream, and possibly more healthy, hobby.

Did they like censor everytime a character or sentence uses the syllable “ね”?

Obviously one of the biggest concerns I that this would imply that they would have more ammunition to throw at the anime community.

Isn’t it time to start pondering about the implications of such a move?
