    • Banzai Beat forums going away

I want to thank everyone for making the forums fun. But due to spammers I just don't want to deal with it. They make hundreds of accounts and spam the living hell out of the forums.

so on that note I'm taking them offline due to very little use and I'm not watching my bandwidth bill be sucked up my spammers.

Thanks again and look forward to a new episode in the coming days.

    • Exams...

I have exams today and for the rest of the week. *sigh*

      Wish me luck ^_^

    • Work...work...

The work...It is piling up!!! Why can't reality and anime co-exist in peace?!??!?!!

  • Admit it, you were attracted to the picture rather than the title.

For those of you who are reading this because you thought it was a cosplay event, too bad. =D

It’s Singapore’s 3rd of 4 annual Computing Fairs and it is big!

Read on if you want to see the two of them in close up. =D

    <3

As I mentioned in this post, I was going down to COMEX 08 to get myself some hardware, namely a laptop.

The crowd is the same old, if not worse. This time, they occupied 5 floors of the convention centre. Just take a look see for yourself.

    People…

    More people…

    Even more people…

    Blah…

Practically everything computer/electronics related, regardless of how remote is, is sold there.

Hard Disks, internal, external, 2.5″, 3.5″, metal casing, plastic casing, yeah you get my point.

    Printers…

    Lol wut? O_o

So what makes these Computer Fairs so popular? Good Deals.

Being Singaporeans, the spirit of Kiasuism burns strong within us and renders us impossible to resist the bundled offers these merchants throw at us.

There, you’ve learnt a new word today, Kiasuism. Go flaunt it to the guy next door. =D

In all seriousness, these fairs do provide some crazy deals you would not usually get in a normal day which explains the thongs of people. The vendors often find some form of high ground and start shouting out their limited bargains rendering the place impossible for any normal conversation and turning the whole event into a high tech version of a Pasar Malam (there! you learned another new word! Go flaunt it!).

Never stand between a Singaporean and a good deal. It could get ugly.

And then there’s the lucky draw which everyone’s hoping to win. You get a try for every $100 you spend. Those who splurged on those uber huge plasma screens pretty much have bag fulls of tickets.

Wish me luck. I’ve never won yet. =P

    .

    [Aftermath]

    eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeePC. :3

So what did I get? As you can see from above it’s the eeePC 1000H, 80GB HDD version. No SDD cuz it was sold out =P

Quite a few people asked me as to regarding my choice.

    I chose it because:-

    1) It’s small.
    2) It’s light at 1.45kg
    3) Decent battery life at reduced settings
    4) Reasonably large screen at 10″. Ain’t half bad watching anime on it =P
    5) I can laugh at people lugging 2.5kg lappies while I do a Macbook Air from my sling bag. (well, almost)
    6) others…

While some will argue that there are also many other models out there who fit the above criteria but I’ve been using a borrowed eeePC 1000H for the past 2 weeks and I like it. I guess that’s the most important factor.

And did I mention I got a free 8GB thumb drive as a freebie? =D

WinXP SP3. No Vista nonsense here.

If there is a gripe I have with the awesomely cool black eeePC it is the glossy surface.

FINGERPRINTS. Will have to come up with something to deal with it. Thinking stickers. Lucky Star Stickers. =D

    After customisation. Miko FTW.

And this ends my short coverage on COMEX 08. That’s it for the Computer Fairs for this year as my exams fall smack right on top of the next one.

My wallet is in a state of apoplexy right now…

I went down on Friday, its just scary how many Singaporeans love to visit PC fairs.

I don’t get it. You pay the same, plus useless freebies, as in a normal store, with infinitely poorer service. You squeeze and suffer in a crowd and waste time. Why? Why do Singaporeans waste time on such dumb exhibitions, staffed by people who don’t know the difference between ram and hard disk space?

Also, you will regret this laptop choice immensely when you see all your friends doing so much more on their laptops. Sure yours is light, but it’s also quite useless at many things. I’m assuming you will use it for school, then the small screen makes it impossible to study properly for long hours. If you want some light gaming, you can only play 2D games like Touhou lol. Team Fortress wont work.

I have a Lenova X61, bought for its sturdiness and lack of weight, and its computing power is much better than what you got. Yet it’s already quite weak. As a guy, 2 kg is almost like air if you got a good laptop bag…

@tj han: It’s nice to see someone point out the negative parts about such shows. I don’t deny that for this particular fair I did have to shove people around abit. =P

And I agree with regards to some staff being clueless too. >_>

However, I would like to point out a few things.

      1) Well, it’s kinda like a festival of sorts. People’s wallets loosen at times like this making it easier to get people to buy stuff together. It’s much harder to get friends to get together and buy stuff with you on an average day when timetables clash.

      2) A number of my friends work part time in such events and they are by no means tech idiots. I can negotiate prices with them and I have.

      3) Yes I will be using it for school and I have been using it for school even before I have bought it. My major is by no means heavily reliant on the computer. Nor do I intend to use it for gaming. I don’t play Touhou nor Team Fortress. =P

      4) Well, I ain’t exactly super fit though. The stairs in NUS are annoying. (National University of Stairs)

Thanks for reading the post though. =D

There is no major in NUS that doesn’t rely on the computer. Maybe except Medicine and Dentistry… I told myself that I would prioritise a small size and weight over having good graphics and a large screen, because my desktop computer would take care of that.

And for the first sem I was right…. then my desktop died. Now I use my desktop’s large monitor for my laptop’s output, and my laptop serves as a CPU. Too shitty to play games which is a shame because you never know when you might get into gaming. And when dumb lecturers make notes that don’t fit onto your screen… haha.

My friend Shane (Xak in anime blogger), he carries this humongous laptop around with two gamepads and extra speakers. He is the mobile gaming platform.

@tj han: I pray (to my new Lucky Star shrine =D) everyday that nothing will ever happen to my desktop. Or it’s peripherals.

The first thing that popped into my mind was a Battlemech when you mentioned “mobile gaming platform”. Lol.

      @tj

ram and hard disk space. the best i ever had was a staff who cldn’t differentiate between MB and GB.

prices…some of the items are the same price + useless freebies while there are selective items that comes cheaper significantly at selected hours in the show.

    7. September 4th, 2008 at 4:31 pm #hinoko

@tj: actually for ur info, NUS dentistry and medicine do rely pretty much on computers too.LOL.
