    Mecha Galore

    Posted in waterjunk's diary at Jun 23rd, 2008 by waterjunk / 9 Comments »

I love mecha. This is acceptable I guess, coming from a guy with an engineering background.

For absolutely no particular reason, today I’m gonna hand these personal awards to the following series:

    The Tech Award: Gundam 00

First of all, Gundam 00 is the first ever Gundam to actually put in effort to make… sense. The age old “overpowered robots fighting even more overpowered robots” concept is less obvious now. In Gundam 00, people DO die and the good guys DO get owned. Fights are more realistic and no more having a single Kira Yamato destroying a whole horde of enemy robots. Everything is futuristic and I absolutely dig their GUIs.

I was sitting in front of my PC when this particular piece of news hit me.

The following is a cut and paste job from Zdnet Australia.

A Singapore company has laid claims to a technology that Web sites across the globe deploy to link images to other Web pages, and sent out notification letters to several companies demanding to be paid licensing fees.

Dubbing itself “pioneers of visual search technology”, Vuestar Technologies said it owns the patent to the technology that enables “Internet searching via visual images”.

In sum, the company implied that any Web site that uses pictures and graphics to link to another site or Web page will need a license from Vuestar.

I used to think that Japanese animation are for kids or grown up girls who wanted to become kids. Back then in ANU hostel anime was the BIG thing – everyone was talking about anime and that pissed me off to no ends.

Gunshots no longer greeted me when I walked down the hallways – high pitched voices got mixed into the whole atmosphere as well giving an impression of a massive loli war taking place behind all those closed doors.

It was a cold and lonely night when the devil came to me. She held me at gunpoint and I downloaded the first episode of Full Metal Panic…

    Ima da badass!

In this episode AEU sent troops to The Republic of Moralia because they need Moralia’s PMC for space development. The anime’s definition for PMC is “a civilian corporation that handles deployment of mercenaries, training of military personals, weapons transport and development and maintenance of a private army”. Obviously the AEU considered the possibility of an attack by the Celestial Beings – but decided to go on ahead because they need human resources and technical expertise of the military contractors.

    Pretty pink.

In this episode they recycled 2 elements that Seed/Destiny fans will definitely notice. Firstly, notice that big, mean-looking robot on top? See any problem with that?

Yes, it was bloody PINK. Maybe that same blockhead in ZAFT who painted Eternal pink also worked on this machine. I mean I have nothing against pink (maybe for the feminism factor?) but painting that onto a war machine just knocked a point or two off their realism scale.

More shots of the pink bot…

Hey all. It’s me again giving insights/thoughts on the latest episode of Gundam 00.
Let’s start by presenting the screen shot of the day…Awesome isn’t it? How often do you see enemy mechas touching each other (thankfully in a non-erotic way)…?

For me personally, this whole OP/ED thing must have the “feel right” factor. This is kinda hard to express in words as each show has its own personality and flavor. Here I’m listing 3 shows which I think did some awesome work in their OPs.

    Spot No.1 – Death Note

This is my all time favourite. The theme is there, the song matches perfectly and Live-eviL did some really awesome job with the karaoke effects. I personally like the scene where the camera zoomed past Light and L who were facing each other. Too bad the said fansubber dropped this series at episode 12 due to licensing issues. There were others who continued though.

    The Gs are back!

This episode began by showing us a boy struggling against hordes of mobile suits which were apparently killing everything that moves. All these while the suits were chanting:
“We are fighting for god. We destroy all who do not follow tradition.”
